Rise and Fall of Xemos

Good Kier,

Please, first, I apologize for the delay in response. Crazy Eye Sam and I have been doing some extensive travelling, and have been away from normal trade and post routes for most of that time. Some time due to geography, some time due to the danger in what we were doing. We have been searching for more clues regarding Crazy Eye Sam and her Father, and that involves a good deal of trying to avoid eyes that might wish us harm. I will tell you anything you might want to know about these matters when next we meet, hopefully in a few days at the coming Market Gather.

As to your previous questions, I will try to give you all the information you asked for, and most likely more. Xemos was human, said by some to be the first human to learn Magic. I don't know that I believe this as stated, but I feel that it might mean he was the first human to learn Magics beyond the norm. He was part of a great Council, a Council that represented the various Elements of the Universe. Xemos was the representative of Darkness. He also was supposedly a Court Mage for a great King, who when Xemos tried to demonstrate to his liege in a great Assembly, was unable to execute what he had attempted to do, and was ridiculed by all, from the King down. This supposedly drove him to evil, and so eventually, he conspired and tricked and manipulated the other members of the Great Council of Elements, until he was able to assume the Power of the Council and bend it to his Will.

This Council was mostly populated by people from a race known as the Elanhil. When it was learned what had become of those on the Council, and what Xemos was intent upon doing, the Elhanil mounted a great force to try and stop Xemos. If I recall correctly, I was told that they managed to drive him off, thinking that they had put a stop to him completely. During this battle, those Elhanil that had been corrupted by Xemos fought with their bretheren, and many Elhanil were killed by the hands of other Elhanil.

This was a great sorrow to the Elhanil, as they were a peaceful people by nature, and many of them decided to leave from this world to travel to another Plane of existence. Several stayed behind, and founded what became known as the Forest of Lights. They stayed because they knew that one day, Xemos would return, and they would be called upon to fight him.

Unfortunately, he had devised for himself a "foolproof" escape plan. Somehow, he managed to "trap" a dragon on the Plane of Darkness. The dragon was placed into a state of Dreaming. Xemos then devised a way for his essence to be hidden away inside this dragon should he ever need to. Unfortunately, it was not known that he had made these elaborate plans until much, much later.

The Elhanil left, leaving behind the small contingent, and the world of mortals returned to its business. The Elhanil did not know that Xemos had hidden himself away, but more sensed that he would somehow, someday manage to return, that is why some of them stayed.

These Events occured approximately 2,000 years ago. During the 2,000 years that followed, Xemos managed to work his machinations subtlely through the Plane of Darkness, and also through the Plane of Dream. In an attempt to regain his lost power, Xemos devised many cruel rituals to give him power. One involved a cauldron of blood, and the other was a ritual that would return Xemos to this Plane.

The cauldron was created as Xemos wished, but the Ritual was backlashed, when someone who was guarding it realized what was happening, and tried to stop it. This caused all those present to be transformed, and became Xemos' strongest Lts. The guard who tried to stop it was transformed into a Spirit Guardian of great power, who aided us when we were battling Xemos in Lorinorea.

However, a point was reached where the ritual to bring Xemos to this Plane was duplicated, and Xemos was freed to walk this Realm. One of his first acts was to assault the Forest of Lights, and unfortunately, so much time had passed, that many of the Elhanil had ascended to spirits, and much of the power they once possessed was no longer there for the few Elhanil who remained.

I feel personally responsible for the destruction of the Forest of Lights. The Elhanil had given us much to help fight Xemos, but we were not strong enough to stop his return, and the Elhanil paid the price. I have journeyed many times to the Forest of Light since that time, but the light has not returned, and the Spirits of the Forest are withdrawn and angry. I believe this great place of beauty will never be as it once was.

It was from the Elhanil that I was given the crystal, which was eventually fashioned into the necklaces that I and Eladhir wear. I did not "harvest" it as such, I awoke one morning on one of my first visits there to find I had been outlined in crystal. To honor the Elhanil, I had it fashioned into necklaces which I bestowed upon several of those who were fighting against Xemos. Fortunately I also had an extra one which I gave to Eladhir as thanks for his presence in these Lands, never expecting the things to happen with them that has.

I would be more than happy to take you with me the next time I travel to the Forest of Lights. I do not expect us to find much there, but it is a pilgrimage I must make. One day I hope to be able to look again upon the face of the Elhanil.

I hope this might help answer some of your questions. If I've missed something you have asked, or if you have more, please seek me out.

Your friend and faithful servant,
Sir Douglas Bluewater
