September 8, 606 ER Gather - Breylands Rest, Greyhelm
Upon arriving at the yet unnamed outpost, no soldiers or supplies were anywhere to be found, and there was an eerie quiet in the area. Squire Carak reported that he had last received word four days prior that all was well. In hindsight, the fact that this report came prior to our town meeting where we decided to travel here was a clue to a leak of our plans. A number of diseased rats were encountered along with a pale humanoid figure that seemed to be controlling them.
Upon returning to the tavern, we found one of Lord Breyland's mirrors on a table with a small girl's voice pleading for help from within it. Undead had somehow entered Breylandia and were ravaging it. By touching Breyland's mirror, the town was one by one transported to Breylandia where undead were ravaging the countryside. We marched to meet them on the field of battle and found a figure who looked similar to "Mandrake" leading them. He also seemed to have control of a number of Breyland's "toys". After a hard fought and long battle, we finally dispatched all of the undead and toys, at which point we were allowed entrance to Breyland's warded manor house. Breyland was found laying in a circle, further tainted than when he'd left us the prior gather. After some trial and error, five of us attempted to draw that taint out of him, each taking a portion of it into ourselves. Thankfully we succeeded with no ill effects lasting beyond dawn the next morning.
Saturday Morning/Early Afternoon
Aside from a few random encounters with the local wildlife, the morning early part of the day passed rather uneventfully. I spent a good portion of the afternoon standing guard for the meeting of nobles to ensure that they were not interrupted, with the exception of when Navar and Modriz relayed some findings from their investigation of the barraks to Guildmaster Dominic.
Late in the afternoon, the sound of many footsteps marching began to echo through the outpost. It appeared that a force of over 200 soldiers was approaching, and it was not sure of their intent. As most everyone gathered on the field of battle, I grabbed Lucien and a relatively inexperienced rogue to circle through the woods and try to hit the soldiers from behind. Unfortunately, we ran into sentries posted watching for just such a maneuver, and were forced to return to the main force. We managed to prevail, though, and the three soldiers that were taken for questioning proved to be quite helpful once fed Enslavement Antidotes. It was learned that vampires had been charming and then enslaving the soldiers, and had quite a large number of them under their control for months which had resulted in a huge breech of security for us. Squire Carak and Lady Sinai both discussed with me the potential need for large quantities of Enslavement Antidotes (in the hundreds); I said that I would look into the matter and do what I was able to, but that my resources were not limitless.
The multicultural buffet seemed to be a great success, and the seating arrangements allowed for some good conversation. Ambassador Ralir, The Blade, and his squire made their appearances, though I did not personally have the opportunity to speak with them. Lady Sinai indicated that it appears she will be allowed to visit Dremora in the near future, though no indication was given of whom would be allowed to go with her.
A group of 10 of us traveled to the wraith's (The Blade's brother, Malshaar) cave to see what we could possibly learn. After clearing the way of traps, we assaulted a small room and found another "Mandrake" along with the wrath and some shadow elementals. During the fight, Sinai secured a number of papers that they were trying to destroy, while I secured other items scattered throughout the room. We also recovered a lone spirit bottle, which was later found to be Dame Miranda's. The wraith, however, escaped, and left a taunting message to us of "Maybe next time" in the circle he had used to leave by.
Lucien and I set out to begin piecing together the recovered documents, and several mentions were made of myself, Lady Sinai, and Baron Travador. Before we could finish, however, the vampires began to attack the town. Their initial incursion was repelled fairly easily, but I was captured by an ambush they set prior to launching a second attack as Lady Sinai, Kivuli, and Althkaelis were escorting me to the cabin to retire for the night. I missed most of the fighting as one of the vampires dragged my imprisoned body into the darkness, but eventually I had the opportunity to drop my spell, call out to Lady Sinai, and then reimprison myself before he felled me. Soon Lady Sinai, Kivuli, and Sereg arrived to rescue me and escort me on to the cabin, where I also secured the documents we had earlier retrieved.
